The last few years have seen us all take a considerable financial hit. Covid, followed by the cost of living crisis, has meant many people dip into their savings and make financial sacrifices. It may feel like you are living paycheck to paycheck and are ‘Penniless’, but this is rarely the case. Here we look at the things that may be worth more than you think and could very well mean you are worth a pretty penny.
Hidden Financial Gems
Did you contribute to a pension during that city job back in 2010? Did you take out a life insurance policy when you switched banks for a better interest rate? Maybe you started saving when the little one was born, but life got in the way, and you haven’t used the account since? The first thing to do when totting up your financial worth is to check all of these things. So, you haven’t got a property or any significant investments – fine. But that doesn’t mean you don’t have money in other pots. Many people die with lost assets not located because their loved ones simply didn’t know they existed.
Making a will sets everything in ink. List all financial assets, no matter how small you think they are, and your loved ones will be able to access them after you have passed on.
Forgotten Toys and Family Jewels
Technology (smart devices, audio and stereo equipment, consoles etc.) are worth a fair bit, so they should be mentioned in your will. But what about those sentimental or retro items? Collectable and family heirlooms often increase in time due to them being hard to find or simply down to good old nostalgia. It’s understandable to want to keep family jewellery in the family. However, it should still be mentioned in your will, along with any antiques and collections such as records, stamps, magazine issues and even figures.

Here are some things that are worth surprisingly more than you would think:
Retro toys – Furbys, Barbies, Sylvanians, what’s in your loft? Toys from the 80s and 90s are very popular and often fetch a nice sum when sold.
Retro games and console – Remember the Mega Drive? The original consoles are still in demand, despite them being remade. Some games attract a tidy some—the same goes for other 90s games and consoles.
Vintage clothing – Fashion goes around in cycles of approximately 25 years. Right now, we are seeing 90s fashion and the 70s creeping back onto the market. Original vintage items sell for a lot of cash on retro sites.
Collectable cards and stickers – Pokémon cards are lucrative things to find in the back of your cupboard. If you have any rare collectable cards and stickers, it is worth getting them valued.
